Eating the Web: Kombucha, Kvass, and Aquafaba

1. Chocolate Beer: A non-alcoholic beer which uses beer brewing principles with cocoa beans makes for a very interesting concept.

2. 21 Ways to Flavour Kombucha: My SCOBY has been basically undisturbed since I acquired it last fall. Time to brew up some new flavours!

3. Cooking with Beet Kvass: I participated in a free 2 hour fermenting class a few weeks ago - and it's really inspired me to get back to fermenting. Using beet kvass in Bloody Mary's seems like an excellent idea!

4. Coffee and Tonic Water: Back in the good ole days when I lived in Toronto, we regularly visited a few coffee shops that offered drink options that combined carbonated beverages with coffee - they were all delicious and I really should DIY it.

5. Aquafaba: I've been intrigued by this concept for weeks now. Basically, the liquid in canned beans (especially chickpeas) can be used as an egg substitute and made into classic egg dishes like meringues! (I made some vegan butter that will be up next week!)

Eating the Web: Gardening

This edition of 'Eating the Web' is pure gardening motivation. I'm really bad at gardening - as I have a tendency to kill everything I try to grow. Here are my garden goals for last year. I'm unsure of my garden plans for this year - what with the upcoming move to Brandon, Manitoba!

1. Send a Seed Filled Card: I've been really getting into snail mail lately and have joined several snail mail writing clubs (If you are interested, check out my hobby blog), so I love this amazing card idea!

2. 12 Easy Vegetables to Grow: Did I mention that I'm horrible at growing things? Maybe I should start with some of these easy vegetables.

3. Seedy Zine: Do you need some growing related motivation? Check out this zine (available online for free here). ps. I'm a contributor!

4. Citrus Recipes? Summer not quiet here but craving a bit of sunshine in your life? Take advantage of year round citrus.

Eating the Web: Brandon, Manitoba

When I moved to Ottawa to complete my MA in philosophy I did very little research. I knew where the school was and that's pretty much it. I've spent some time in Brandon in the recent years so I have a basic understanding of the town but I've also done a lot of research in recent days. Here are some of my favourite blogs and organizations from the Brandon/Winnipeg area.

1. Oh So Lovely Vintage: I've been following this blog for a while now. This cute vintage blog is associated with a vintage/thrift shop in Winnipeg called Rhymes with Orange, which I have yet to visit. The vibe of the blog is cute, positive, and happy.

2. Chicks and Peas: This food blog has absolutely beautiful food photography. The girls that run this blog are creating a wonderful, responsible food community in Winnipeg.

3. Ramble and Feast: Another Winnipeg part journal/part food blog with an amazing, positive and motivational vibe.

4. Fruit Share: (The Brandon version of Toronto's Not Far From the Tree) I've already signed up to volunteer!

5. The Quill: I've been catching up on Brandon University issues by reading articles on The Quill. The recent SUDS (Student Union Drinking Spot) referendum has been interesting to say the least.

6. Beer Crank: The very existence of this beer blog makes me happy.

Eating the Web: Maple Syrup, Alphabet Soup, and Self-care

1. My homesteading dreams loom on the horizon and making my own maple syrup is high on the 'dream list'. Check out Punk Domestics maple syrup round up here.

2. I baked up a few slices of 'toast' the other day. They are super cute and I'll have to add some jam and glaze to finish them up!

3. One of my favorite food themed podcasts is back (after a 4 month hiatus) and better than ever. Alphabet Soup Podcast!

4. It appears that I'm headed to Brandon University for more #graduateschooltorture. I've been reading up on the town and the University pub. I'm eagerly awaiting the referendum in reference to the University pub - the proposed levy is $10 per student which is VERY high. Fingers crossed they vote no! Check out the article here.

5. There's still time to submit to the food themed self-care zine I'm co-editing! Details.

Eating the Web: Culinary To-do List

In honor of the great website - punkdomestics - and of me getting over my anxieties and contributing the following links were all discovered via punkdomestics.

1. Kimchi. I've been making kraut for years and the principle of kimchi is the same. I love the story that accompanied this recipe.

 (Source)

 2. I have all of Sandor Ellix Katz's books and tried to make a ginger bug with non-organic ginger a few years ago. Here's to organic success!

3. I've been brewing up a lot of kombucha in recent months but this Mexican Hot Chocolate Flavored Kombucha sounds crazy!

Eating the Web: Focus on Community

1. 'Beet the System' - Radical communities are an important part of the picture as radical food communities are passionately working toward social justice surrounding food.

2. Fermentation on Wheels - The founder is traveling and teaching individuals about fermented foods.

3. Got Bannock? - A food related response to Idle No More where the founder stated "in honor of the village our people once had".

Eating the Web: Tumblr Addition

I've discovered Tumblr. Or rather I've tumbled down a hole called Tumblr. I've even launched a new 'WRITE' themed project at: http://bake-at-350.tumblr.com/. I've come across some beautiful, touching, funny and just plain wonderful food themed posts on tumblr. Here are a few of my favorites.

Eating the Web: Favorite Fall Drinks

1. I missed this great Toronto event that paired beer with bugs (that reminds me of a high school science fair project of mine where I made Cricket Chocolate Chip Cookies).
2. Roasted Squash Cocktail. Seems perfect for fall and a perfect way to use up some of the abundance of fall squashes.
3. Autumn from Alphabet Soup Podcast has been posting some amazing fall drinks on Series Eats. Check out her Pumpkin Cocktails. Want something more adventurous - how about some Beet Cocktails?
4. Glogg has been on my holiday to-do list for many years. Last year I managed to make a mulled beer using the same basic technique.
5. I've been enjoying chia seed kombucha lately. Learn how to brew your own kombucha with my online course. Click here for free access!

Coming Home to the Kitchen: Eating the Web

1. Hosting a dinner party can seem intimidating but check out this very chill post on the subject. You can do it
2. Meal planning has been on my list for ages and ages. This post acts as inspiration for my slacker habits while this article on protein in a vegan diet reassures me that even if I eat three meals of beans I'll live! :)
3. Gluten-free bread intrigues me (even though I love my gluten!) but baking your own seems utterly inapproachable! That's why I love this post that really breaks down the steps of GF baking!

4. As autumn approaches a guide to creating the perfect fall soup seems very appropriate.

5. Bookmark this post for next summer – when the very thought of cooking makes you sweat

Coming Home to the Kitchen: Eating the Web

1. Everyone KNOWS that cooking dried beans saves money and tastes better but I simply cannot get my stuff together enough to do so. Chickpeas are especially difficult to cook from their dried state for some reason – I always end up with hard chickpeas. Apparently boiling chickpeas with a little baking soda speeds up the process by quite a lot.
2. Of course, another option for cooking dried beans is the dreaded, explosive pressure cooker! Who hasn't heard a story about these things exploding? Here's a post to ease your discomfort with the pressure cooker. You'll be eating tons of beans in no time at all!
3. Tired of eating plain old apples and oranges? Try these beautiful fruit platters as a way to get your fruit in a new, visually pleasing way!
4. Breakfast is one of my least eaten meal especially during the week. I do enjoy making pancakes on the weekend but I could definitely use this list of easy breakfast ideas.
5. I rarely follow recipes – especially when it's zero hour and I have 20 minutes to plan something for supper. I tend to make a lot of bean salads (especially in the summer when I can't bear to turn on the stove or oven!) I follow a lot of the improvisation tips outlined here. This specific recipe for tomato and white bean salad seems perfect for my cooking style!
6. Meal planning has been on my list for ages and ages. This post acts as inspiration for my slacker habits while this article on protein in a vegan diet reassures me that even if I eat three meals of beans I'll live! :)
7. Gluten-free bread intrigues me (even though I love my gluten!) but baking your own seems utterly inapproachable! That's why I love this post that really breaks down the steps of GF baking!
8. As autumn approaches a guide to creating the perfect fall soup seems very appropriate.

Eating the Web: Baking, Peanuts and Pizza

1. Live in a dorm room but still love cake? Baking in a panini press might be the answer!
2. Tired of the standard food shows? Wish they would combine two of your favourite things? Never fear - James Deen has a food show!
3. Pickling is trend. Pickled peanuts.
4. I write in my cookbooks but have started adding the date I made the recipe since reading this awesome piece on the topic.
5. The Diary of a Pizza Girl makes for some interesting reading.

Eating the Web: Beets, Licorice, and Pickles

1. I've wanted to try Beef Bourguigon since Julia Child but as I don't eat meat I thought it was a pipe-dream. However, this Beet Bourguigon recipe will do nicely!
2. Need a weekend project? How about some homemade licorice?
3. I recently made the sauerkraut soup from Vegan Eats World. It was yummy so I think this Dill Pickle Soup would be tasty as well!
4. I can think of nothing besides Caramelized White Chocolate. So many ideas!
5. On my culinary to-do list, mastering the Five Mother Sauces.

Eating the Web: Beer

1.Vinegar is a complex but simple process and can be made from many things, including beer/mead.
2. One person can make a difference - especially in craft beer.
3. Beer can be made with all kinds of ingredients - including beans!
4. This ecofriendly brewery uses spent grains as fuel. I like it but I still want to be able to steal spent grains from brewiers for my own purposes!
5. Still unsure on how to tip? Here's some ideas - although I don't agree with tipping even if you get bad service.

Eating the Web: white whiskey, tyranny, and the appletini

1. I've always thought white whiskey was an abomination of nature but perhaps I was wrong...
2. The tyranny of fine dinning. Oh to be rich and have these problems!
3. An interesting article regarding the colour of the mug from which one drinks hot chocolate.
4. Upgrading the 90's horror - the appletini.
5. I've made bread with spent grains before but the Flying Monkey Brewery baked up some bread with flour, wort, brewing water, salt and brewing yeast which I found very interesting.

Keep up with what I am eating online by following me on twitter @Sarah999

Eating the Web: Celebrations (left overs and recovery)

1. Have you ever experienced the rare phenomenon of left over champagne? It's easy to make vinegar with your boozy leftovers!

2. While too late for this holiday season, check out this beer advent calender for next year's celebrations!

3. Make a shopping list. Mix up a batch of this. You won't regret it. Aged Eggnog.

4. There is leftovers and then there are LEFTOVERS. I think feces fermented into alcohol counts as the latter.

5. "Out with the old - and empty"

Drinking: Winter Cocktails

1. Beer floats. Float may be thought of as classic summer fare but I think that a good stout and a homemade vanilla icecream would be welcome on a sunny winter afternoon.
2. Spike some hot chocolate with a peppermint liquor.
3. Toronto's fall is a lot warmer than I'm used to but when it gets even a tiny bit cold here I switch to drinking cup after cup of apple cider. This apple pie spiced cider seems amazing.
4. How about a cranberry cider?
5. Of course I will be drinking booze this winter! I think Merry Cranberry Margaritas will be on the menu!

Eating the Web: Beer

1. Weight in on (or discover) the debate regarding buying/selling beer in growlers.
2. Can you brew beer from sourdough starter? The answer is YES! (reminds me of my kvass adventures!)
3. Ale to the Chief! The Obamas homebrew recipe released!
4. I always vote for draught beer, but is that the best choice?
5. And of course, pairing beer with personal failure.

Eating the Web: Katz and the state of things.

1. While the Popinator may encapsulate all that is wrong with Western society... I'd still buy one!
2. As you can tell from my "From Scratching" tag, I enjoy making when the rest of the world buys so homemade coconut butter seems like a good idea.
3. Sador Ellix Katz, the godfather of fermentation, visits Momofuko Noodle Bar.
    A. I thought he lived on a commune
    B. His "Art of Fermentation" is already on it's third printing
    C. He started with a zine!
    D. Read about it here.
4. Pick-your-own orchards represent all that is wrong with America in this article.
5. And of course, the state of food writing.

I'll be back in October for Vegan MoFo. My theme will be Toronto.
In the meantime, follow me on twitter @Sarah999 for more food tweets!
