My Vintage Kitchen: Rosettes

What is it?
A Rosette iron.
Where did I get it?
For $5 in Sarnia.  I was totally pumped about it as I had been looking for one for years!
Do I use it?
You can read about the first (and so far only) time that I used these here.

My Vintage Kitchen: Spoon Rest

What is it?
Mushroom shaped spoon rest with a painted owl.
Where did I get it?
Thrift store in Toronto.
Do I use it?
Yes. Although, I am currently still using my Christmas spoon rest. Don't judge me!

My Vintage Kitchen: Jigger

What is it?
Jiggers are the 'fancy' way to measure shots. I like them because they are easy to pour into the boston shaker.
Where did I get it?
Don't remember.
Do I use it?
Yes, I use these whenever I have to measure a shot of anything (which is frequent around here!)

What is it?

A dangerous looking mandolin.

Where did I get it?

From a thrift store in Manitoba. The guy did not even know what it was for but I was so pumped to find this piece. It is beautiful!

Do I use it?

I am way to scared to actually use this!

My Vintage Kitchen: Angel Food Cake Pan

What is it?
An angel food cake pan.
Where did I get it?
From my mother when I moved out.
Do I use it?
I have not made or eaten angel food cake in almost 7 years! I used to love it but alas I have yet to find a vegan version. Although I hear there is a recipe floating around out there...

My Vintage Kitchen: Tupperware

What is it?
A Tupperware sandwich container. It was a blue stamp of a bunny and my faded name written in a child's hand.
Where did I get it?
My mother gave this to me when I moved out.
Do I use it?
For the first couple of years after I moved out I did use it. Now I primarily use glass containers for storage.

My Vintage Kitchen: Mixing Bowls

What is it?
Set of 4 nesting Rosti mixing bowls.
Where did I get it?
Boutique thrift store in Toronto. I do not want to tell you how much I paid for these. Especially when I found the 2 smallest sizes for pennies in comparison at a different thrift store (but in yellow - I love the brown!)
Do I use it?
Yes. These are my everyday mixing bowls. Everything that is made in my kitchen gets some Rosti love!

My Vintage Kitchen: Ice Shaver

What is it?
A vintage 'Ice-Pet' ice shaver. The thin silver handle controls a huge suction cup on the bottom of the shaver. This suction cups works so well! Originally it comes with little cups in which to freeze water to shave but I did not get them with my ice-pet! I use paper Dixie cups.
Where did I get it?
Goodwill for a buck!
Do I use it?
Yes! I found this at the end of the summer and so only made a couple of drinks with it, but I can see it being a mainstay in the summer or any time for shaved iced margaritas!

My Vintage Kitchen: Ice Crusher

What is it?
Swing-line Ice crusher.
Where did I get it?
Thrift store for 20 bucks, which at the time I thought was a lot but...
Do I use it?
I use this almost daily in the summer. It makes ice chips out of ice cubes. I love iced coffee with crushed ice! yum!

What is it?
A glass ice bucket.
Where did I get it?
I simply can't remember!
Do I use it?
Not yet. But it will be a classy addition to my bar! :)

My Vintage Kitchen: Another Decanter

What is it?
A large, heavy, glass decanter.
Where did I get it?
I think I paid around 10 bucks for this in Toronto.
Do I use it?
Not yet. But I plan on using it to store either gin or vodka in the future.

What is it?
An etched glass decanter with 6 shot glasses all decorated with model T cars.
Where did I get it?
For $3.99 from a thrift store
Do I use it?
No. But if I ever have a physical bar space (next apartment for sure) I will! It'll be the perfect Collingwood decanter!

My Vintage Kitchen: Fish serving dish

What is it?
Fish shaped serving dish. Each coloured dish is removable from the wooden fish shaped dish.

Where did I get it?
Flea market in Toronto.

Do I use it?
I have not found a suitable time to use this dish yet, and I do not think anyone has ever used it.

My Vintage Kitchen: Cocktail Stirrers

What is it?
A collection of cocktail stirrers. These are mostly vintage (except the CN tower, and the brown paddle). I collect (i.e. steal) cocktail stirrers from bars. I seriously debated buying 5000 plastic cocktail arrows at the thrift store but they wanted like 10 bucks for it. (I would have paid 5!) 

Where did I get it?
Most of the vintage green ones I got as a pack and I payed 25 cents a piece for the golf club, mermaid, and wedding one.

Do I use it?
I love to use my cocktail stirrers. I think they make a regular drink extra fancy!

My Vintage Kitchen: Storage Containers

What is it?
I love these canisters! I snatched them up so quick when I saw them. There is four canisters total. The two little ones are labeled 'tea' and 'coffee' and the two big ones are labeled 'sugar' and 'flour'.

Where did I get it?
Thrift store in Toronto.

Do I use it?
Everyday! Well except the coffee canister, as I don't drink coffee everyday! :)

What is it?

A brown Hendlers Bread Box, made of painted metal.

Where did I get it?

Thrift store in Toronto.

Do I use it?

I use this bread box all the time and it has a place of honour on my cupboard.

My Vintage Kitchen: Cookie Press

What is it?

A vintage cookie press with close to 15 cookie plates. The box that I bought it in came with half a dozen handwritten recipes. 

Where did I get it?

Toronto antique market.

Do I use it?

No. I don't think it would stand up to actual use.

My Vintage Kitchen: Ice Cream Bowls

What is it?
Set of 5 glass icecream cups that are, interesting enough, heat proof. I also have one in avocado green.

Where did I get it?
The 5 orange ones I picked up a church yard sale in Regina, Sask. The green one I found in a thrift shop in Ottawa. The oranges ones were 2 dollars and the green one 99 cents.

Do I use it?
You know it! I enjoy a ton of homemade icecream from these cups!

My Vintage Kitchen: oh nuts!

What is it?

This is a glass and metal nut grinder. It makes nuts into a fine powder.

Where did I get it?

A thrift store in Carberry, Manitoba. I think I spent around 5 bucks on it.

Do I use it?

I have not used it yet but that is simply because I have had no need to grind nuts into a powder.

My Vintage Kitchen: Light Bulb Salt and Pepper Shakers

What is it?
Orange and Green Glass salt and pepper shakers shaped like light bulbs. I fell for the deep colors of these shakers.

Where did I get it?
I am not sure where I picked these up, or how much I paid.

Do I use it?
Another one for the collection! (pssst. While it may not seem like I use many of my vintage items, I really do! The usable ones will show up eventually this month! :) )

My Vintage Kitchen: Juice-O-Mat

What is it?
It's a red "Single Action" Juice-O-Mat.

Where did I get it?
I picked this up in a thrift store in Toronto's Kensington Market. I won't tell you how much I paid, but it definitely wasn't a deal. I just fell in love with the shape and design of this product.

Do I use it?
Yet another display piece.

What is it?
It's a "Merry Maker Party Set" which includes four brightly coloured and very large shot glasses with fun graphics in it's original packaging.
Where did I get it?
A thrift store in Toronto.
Do I use it?
This was purchased with the intention of display.

My Vintage Kitchen: Corn Servers

What is it?

Vintage Corn Servers which is the "Modern Way to Serve Corn" according to the original box. I am a sucker for kitchen equipment in the original box.  

Where did I get it?

A garage sale in Manitoba for 2 dollars.

Do I use it?

No. I purchased this with the intention of displaying it. Although,we had the corn husk shaped corn holders as a kid, and they sure are fun to eat out of!

My Vintage Kitchen: Whisk

What is it?
An old whisk that has no identifying marks and some lovely chips of red paint on the handle that points to it's glory days.
Where did I get it?
This is the whisk that we used at the cottage when I was a kid. I remember my dad calling this the world's best whisk. I can only remember him making a few dishes that were family favorites, but I did learn a few interesting cooking tips from him. Some of which are

a. green relish in tuna fish is divine
b. a little soy sauce in a flat soup gives it a kick
c. spread pb on first with a heavy hand, then use a light one to spread on jam - that way they won't smear and get the knife all dirty.

These family secrets are now revealed on the internet - Sorry, Dad!
I looked for a whisk similar to this for close to five years, finally I got my parents to send me the original! Now I see them everywhere!
Do I use it?
I haven't used it yet.

My Vintage Kitchen: Potato Masher

What is it?
An old and crooked potato masher.
Where did I get it?
My mother gave this to me when I moved out to go to University.
Do I use it?
I wish there was more to say about this - but, really, it's a potato masher. I use it, you know - when I mash potatoes.

My Vintage Kitchen: Salt and Pepper Shakers

What is it?
This is a metal salt and pepper shaker. It has no visible markings or etchings on it.
Where did I get it?
I picked this up (and probably paid to much) at a vintage store in Toronto. The owner sold me on it by saying that it was probably a metal apprentice's practical project. I have no idea if that is true or not but it is very well made - so if it is true, I hope they got a good mark on it!
Do I use it?
I do not use this as I use freshly ground black pepper and sea salt. I have a weakness for salt and pepper shakers. They are usually just so cute I can't pass them up!

My Vintage Kitchen: Espresso Cups

What is it?

Set of 4 Carlo Giannini espresso cups. These are made of plastic and stainless steel. They were made in Italy. A google search reveals that these were made in white, black and red. This site claims that they were seen on Star Trek! 

Where did I get it?

I picked these up in a thrift store in Toronto for two dollars each. Given their claim to fame, I think that was a steal!

Do I use it?

I have not used these yet. I do not drink that much espresso and the handle seems like it would be difficult to maneuver. In the kitchen of my dreams these beautifully designed cups will have a place of honour, until then they take up space in my cupboard!

News for February

I thought January was a busy month but February is going to be mad crazy for me! I have a lot of academic work to do and will be presenting at several conferences this month. You can check out www.sarahhoffman99.blogspot.com for more information on my academic endeavours.

But as for food in February, a delicious twist of fate finally has my husband and I together over Valentine's Day, for the first time since we were married four years ago! I hope to cook an Ethiopian meal inspired by Papa Tofu loves Ethiopian Food. That's about as much as I can foresee for February!

I will be posting doing a blogging marathon entitled "My Vintage Kitchen" which will highlight and tell the story of some of my favorite vintage kitchen pieces!
